A naming and dedication ceremony was held today at Thunderbird School of Global Management as one of the school’s buildings was officially renamed the Barbara and Craig Barrett Building. The naming is in appreciation for and recognition of Barbara and Craig Barrett’s longtime, ongoing support of the school.
The Barretts have helped to fulfill Thunderbird’s mission through generous monetary gifts and the use of their skills, connections and personal resources. Most recently, Ambassador Barbara Barrett served as Interim President of Thunderbird from April – November, 2012. Previously, she served on the Thunderbird Board of Trustees for 18 years, including a term as Chairman of the Board from 2001-2003. Dr. Craig Barrett is a leading advocate for education around the world. He has served on the faculty of Thunderbird and in the Thunderbird Educator Network. He also has spoken at numerous high-profile Thunderbird events. Both Barretts served as chairs of Thunderbird’s most recent capital campaign that concluded successfully in 2011.
During the naming reception, Thunderbird President Larry Edward Penley, Ph.D., toasted the Barretts and recounted their years of service to Thunderbird. “In recognition of the role that education, especially international business education, plays in our prosperity and economic development, and in the development of the lives affected by the businesses that are created; in the role that donors play in our nonprofits, especially in education and in this great school; but especially today in recognition of Barbara and Craig Barrett, we offer this toast in your honor,” Penley said.
About 100 faculty, staff, students and friends of the school attended the event, including former Arizona State University President Lattie Coor, Thunderbird Trustee F. Richard Hsu, and longtime Thunderbird supporter Kenneth Jacuzzi ’79. The Barbara and Craig Barrett Building, built in 1998, houses Thunderbird’s Career Management Center and serves as world headquarters for Thunderbird Executive Education.
