Transforming Irish Rail
Case number:

Abstract
Irish Rail is the national railway system of Ireland. The company operates passenger and freight services and manages the national railway infrastructure. Despite significant investments and modernization efforts, Irish Rail has historically faced challenges, including economic downturns and strained labor relations. Irish Rail’s labor relations have traditionally been conflict-driven, characterized by intense negotiations, industrial disputes, and intervention by external mediators like the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) and the Labor Court. The case documents how CEO Jim Meade and his team transformed organizational culture and relations in ways that could support the implementation of an ambitious strategic vision.
