Curriculum

Global Health Perspectives and Trends

The Global Health Perspectives and Trends course introduces participants to the field of global health, providing a population-based perspective on health care policy, practice, and research. In this course, we will discuss basic but essential global health concepts. You will have the opportunity to become familiar with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, with particular emphasis on the global health agenda and the roles of the World Health Organization and other key players in global health. The course also covers socioeconomic determinants of health. It examines world health disparities and the global burden of specific conditions —such as infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases — as well as the broad concepts of disease prevention and health promotion, the life-course approach to population health, and global health challenges. Throughout the program we will share examples of strategies and interventions used in global health to improve population health outcomes.

This course examines how global health experts bridge the gap between the best practices of global health research and the real-world intricacies of global health practice. Explore the strategies these experts utilize for global health surveillance, monitoring, and research. Familiarize yourself with some of the common ways to disseminate global health data, and how to create more effective policy based on evidence-based practices. What are the ways to iterate this cycle on a global scale, especially in times of global health crises or disaster response? Throughout the course, we will share examples of how health professionals can engage with this process at multiple levels.

  • Distinguish between global health practice and global health policy.
  • Articulate applications in global health and ways in which research informs policy, policy informs practice, and practice informs outcomes.

  • Integrate applications in global health within your profession or field of study.
